QTC's latest production Kelly is, unsurprisingly, all about the Kelly Gang. But this time, instead of the sole focus being the man behind the tin mask, the story revolves around Dan Kelly, the brother thought perished in the final shoot-out.
Writer Matthew Ryan (Boy Girl Wall) has taken hard facts and interwoven surmised stories and potential possibilities as we watch how the final hours of Ned Kelly's life may have really played out. The production is flawless, with an electric combination of sublime acting, ingenious set design, simple yet effective costumes and masterful direction.
The three actors involved in the play become their characters, seamlessly slipping into their roles. Steven Rooke as Ned is mesmerising; his masculinity combining with his character's silver tongue to make for a very appealing criminal. Leon Cain matched Rooke's acting muscle move for move as Dan, and Hugh Parker was versatile, stepping into reimagined moments and people from the Kellys' past whenever needed to flesh out the story.
An engrossing, highly enjoyable night out at the theatre.
Kelly will be staged at the Cremorne Theatre, QPAC until October 20.
