It’s cultural, it’s got attitude, it’s hilarious, it’s spectacular and it’s for everyone.
Showcasing some of the world's most acclaimed street, outdoor theatre, music, comedy, circus and cabaret performers, the Fremantle Street Arts Festival will be in full swing from Saturday 30 March to Monday 1 April.
Presented by the City of Fremantle, the event has grown since its inception in 1999 to become the largest street arts festival in Australia. This year, it is set to be bigger than ever, with more than 30 of the world’s finest street performers and an estimated 150,000 spectators.
“We are proud that the Fremantle Street Arts Festival is internationally recognised and consistently attracts the cream of the world’s street performing talent. Each year a variety of different artists are curated to provide performances that are unique and full of surprises.” says Fremantle Mayor, Dr Brad Pettitt.
French company Bilbobasso will headline the Festival this year with Polar, a visually stunning performance that combines bold flame work and the intensity and infinite tenderness of Argentinean tango.
Bilbobasso captured the attention of Festival Director Alex Marshall on a rainy night at the Chalon dans la Rue in France. “This show had everything – it was sassy, sexy, dramatic and world class theatre on the street. It was pouring down with rain, but it didn’t stop the enormous audience from being transfixed."
“We’re thrilled to be bringing this amazing show to Australia for the first time. It is a reflection of where the Fremantle Street Arts Festival is headed and a testament to the event that we are able to attract these world-class artists," said Marshall.
With the exception of a few ticketed night shows, most performances over the weekend are free, with the option to pay what you believe the entertainment is worth as the artists pass their hat through the crowd.
