Hardly Normal Harvey

Mary Chase's Pulitzer Prize-winning tale of madness, perception and friendship comes to life in Brisbane when Nash Theatre presents their production of the classic, 'Harvey'.

Elwood P. Dowd is a pretty regular guy, if not a touch eccentric. Mild-mannered, good-natured and generally liked in his hometown, he raises eyebrows among his family and peers when he introduces a friend only he can see: Harvey, a six-foot-three-and-one-half-inch tall rabbit.

In a comedy of errors, Elwood is committed against his will to the sanatorium by his sister then mistakenly released. Throughout the story,  Elwood endures a series of events which leads both the other characters and the audience to wonder if Harvey is as imaginary as we all believe. Is Elwood insane because he sees the rabbit, or is everyone else because they refuse to?

Making its Broadway debut in 1944, Harvey has become a much-loved favourite, having been adapted into both film and television, most notably a 1950 film starring James 'it's a wonderful life' Stewart. More recently, Jim Parsons (better known as Sheldon Cooper on TV's 'The Big Bang Theory') took up the coveted role of Elwood in the 2012 Broadway revival.

Nash Theatre's production of 'Harvey' represents Stop Three on their 'Magical Mystery Tour' 2016 season, which has already featured 'Rebecca' by Daphne du Maurier and Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. Directed by Bianca Butler Reynolds and featuring a human cast of talented performers, 'Harvey' is a must-see for long-time fans and newcomers to the story alike.

'Harvey' plays at Nash Theatre, New Farm from 9-30 July, with a matinee on 10 July.
