Hans And Lucky Seven's Loveboat! Review @ Adelaide Cabaret Festival 2018

Hans
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

From Lucky Seven’s buoyant opening number 'Island Holiday' to the surprisingly arranged finale, 'My Heart Will Go On',  music, mirth and mayhem of a maritime nature ruled this show.

Hans the German (originally famous in Adelaide – soon to conquer the world) is a consummate cabaret creation. The way he works a room impressed. At this performance, not only did he chat up and gently tease an elderly eastern suburbs gent, but also happened upon a young 20-year-old truck driving theatre-virgin. What a gift from the banter gods.

The members of Lucky Seven, plus a pianist, proved stars in their own right. Performing their arrangements of all numbers, these truly fine musicians shone, introducing many of us to Rhythm and Blues pieces that blew the audience away. The blend of the two fan bases meant for a very musical audience – singing along and getting musical jokes. Not only could they clap on two and four, they could syncopate!

Of course, no Hans show goes without multiple costume changes. Many a spandex gave its life for the cause of art. Of particular note is the grey and white sailor suit made of sequins, worn as Hans entered atop hunky sailor shoulders. The lighting and sound were spot on.

Hans gave his all throughout the performance and the energy of the encore rivalled that of the most famous performance of 'Proud Mary'.

My only gripe is there was not enough accordion for my liking.
