"I'm going to eat you." So begins Great White, a play as heartwarming as it is bloodthirsty. When young love meets giant fin, suddenly life seems large, scary and beautiful.
A terrifiying new play by writer/director Will O'Mahony, Great White tells the tale of two tiny people in a huge ocean with a hungry fish. According to O'Mahony, WA's shark fatalities are etched on to the state's collective conscious, creating a love/hate relationship with the ocean.
"What interests me is how the ocean is still one of the few places where we can truly escape," he says, "from ourselves and from each other. For all its danger the ocean holds us in its thrall and maybe promises something we can't get on land. I often wonder whether a part of us, a small part of us, wants nothing but to swim and swim 'til we disappear."
Presented by Perth's newest theatre company, The Skeletal System, Great White is a love story that promises to explore fate, human frailty and every swimmer's worst night mare.
Great White plays at The Blue Room Theatre from June 12-29. For more info, head to blueroom.org.au.
