Critically acclaimed performer Roman Banks will lead the Australian premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical ‘MJ’, debuting at Sydney Lyric Theatre in February, 2025.
Roman Banks made his historic Broadway debut in the award-winning ‘Dear Evan Hansen’. This was the first time an African American performer had portrayed the title role. He was then cast as Howie in the Disney+ series ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’, before returning to the stage to lead the US national tour of ‘MJ’.
“This show taught me power. It taught me freedom. It taught me heartbreak. It taught me patience. It taught me wisdom. It’s an experience that has refined every aspect of my artistic being,” Roman says on Instagram, of his time in the US as MJ.
“I’m incredibly grateful for all that it gave me, and all that it gave so many others. The fans, the cast, my friends and my family. Michael’s immeasurable impact on art and the world is a gift and testament to the power of pursuit within divine purpose. I’m grateful I got to be a part of it.”
Director and Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon is thrilled to be bringing Roman to Australia for the production.
“Sydney won’t know what hit it when Roman explodes onto the stage,” Christopher says. “His artistry and his interpretation of the role are astonishing, we are so lucky to have him lead our company in Australia.”
‘MJ’ marks Roman’s debut performance in Australia.
“Starring in the first national tour of ‘MJ: The Musical’ across the United States was a dream come true,” Roman says. ?:As a performer, this creative team has given me the ultimate gift in being able to play this extraordinary role. Not only that, but they’ve created a vehicle to celebrate the artistry and inspiration of one of the most significant black performers the world will ever see.”
“Joy is an understatement, and I’m so deeply enthralled for another opportunity to share this show, music, and captivating story with Australia.”
Roman will be joined by Brisbane-based newcomer Liam Damons, making his professional debut as young adult Michael. . . Alongside a cast made up of the likes of Josslynn Hlenti Afoa, Derrick Davis, Penny McNamee, Shewit Belay, Martha Berhane, Eric Boyd, Fletcher O'Leary, Brittany Page, Dustin Praylow, Tigist Strode and Iris Wei.
The story takes place inside the iconic ‘Dangerous’ world tour, offering a rare look at the creative mind and collaborative spirit, which catapulted Michael Jackson into legendary status. It features more than 25 of Michael’s greatest hits including ‘Beat It’, ‘Smooth Criminal’, ‘Man In The Mirror’, and ‘Thriller’.
‘MJ The Musical’ opens at Sydney Lyric Theatre 26 February.
