Tony Award-winner and international screen star Owen Teale will play Ebenezer Scrooge in the upcoming return season ‘A Christmas Carol’ in Melbourne this year.
Owen is best known for his role Alliser Thorne in ‘Game Of Thrones’, but his stage credits include ‘Under Milk Wood’, ‘Mary Stuart’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Creditors’, ‘Rutherford And Son’, ‘Julius Caesar’, ‘Henry IV’, ‘King Lear’, ‘Ivanov’, and ‘The Country’.
Owen previously played Scrooge, to great acclaim, in The Old Vic’s 2022 London production.
“We are so delighted to welcome Owen Teale back to Australia to lead the 2023 Melbourne production of ‘A Christmas Carol’,” Executive Producer Torben Brookman says. “Owen [Teale] is such an outstanding actor and we are so thrilled to provide Australian audiences with the opportunity to see him on stage alongside the incredible Australian company.”
This mark’s Owen’s first time on an Australian stage since the 2004 tour of the West End production, ‘Dance Of Death’.
“I've never been happier to be getting on a plane brimful with humbug knowing that Melbourne is to knock it out of me every night in this great piece of theatre,” Owen Teale says.
“Jack Thorne, Matthew Warchus, Rob Howell and Chris Nightingale have adapted Charles Dickens’ legendary tale into something greater than the sum of its parts. It gets into people’s hearts and minds and changes them – it's theatre at its best. Come and be part of it.”
Owen will star alongside Debra Lawrance, Bernard Curry, Grant Piro, Sarah Morrison, Samantha Morley, Anthony Harkin, Andrew Coshan, Stephanie Lambourn, Aisha Aidara, Deirdre Khoo and Kaya Byrne. The company is completed by Cameron Bajraktarevic-Hayward, Ben Colley, Jack Van Staveren and Jasmine Vaughns.
Tickets are on sale now.
‘A Christmas Carol’ plays at Comedy Theatre (Melbourne) 12 November-31 December.
