The girls at The Bombshell Burlesque Academy pride themselves on teaching women (and men) the seductive art of tease with burlesque, vintage beauty, go-go and pin-up workshops.

The theatrical, sexy dance style that embraces the femininity of dressing-up – and down – with feathers, high heels, corsets, gloves, glitter and crystals (and men in their bowler hats and vests) combines a little cheekiness, sass and edge, and a lot of vintage glamour. Though the girls and guys love to perform on stage and thrive for attention, audience newcomers are often shy and timid. One of the academy's debut soloists, Rosetta Sterling – who will be performing at the 10th annual Bombshell's Ball – highlights her five tips to surviving your first burlesque show.

Have an open mind

So you’ve decided to see what this burlesque thing is all about. You’ve purchased your ticket, you’ve dressed up and now you’re wondering what to expect when the show begins. Expect anything. The great thing about burlesque is that inspiration can be taken from anything. You can see a whole host of characters on stage; anything from the classic showgirl to a Submarine. The best thing you can do is relax and enjoy the show.

Yes, you are allowed to look

This may seem like an obvious point, but it would surprise you to know how often this shyness is seen. We burlesque performers put a lot of effort into our costumes and choreography, and we wouldn’t do it if we didn’t want you to watch. Don’t be shy, we certainly aren’t.

Cheer

This isn’t golf, it’s a burlesque show. There is nothing so uncomfortable as performing to a silent audience. So, give us a cheer and let us know that you’re enjoying yourself. The louder the audience, the better we dance. Just like Lady Gaga, we live for the applause.

Leave the camera at home

Trust me, the show is much better to watch live than it is through your phone screen. I’m sure you’re very good at selfies, but getting a good action shot can be tricky. Most events hire their own photographers so you’re better off leaving it to the professionals.

Enjoy

So your phone is in your pocket and you’re cheering on the dancing Pterodactyl on stage, Congratulations! You’re a successful burlesque audience member. All that’s left for you to do is sit back, enjoy and wonder how a Pterodactyl can afford that many rhinestones.

The Bombshell Burlesque Ball will be held on Friday the 10th October at The Studio, Metro Arts.
