Fire Walk With Us At Wonderland Festival: Open Letter From Vocalist Mia Goodwin

'Fire Walk With Us'
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Iconic TV series 'Twin Peaks' and its prequel film 'Fire Walk With Me' are celebrated in this performance reimagining the music from both.

Electric Moon brings together a 12-piece ensemble of musicians from backgrounds of jazz and avant-garde, and four vocalists, collaborating thanks to their love of the work.

'Fire Walk With Us' has been reworked for a full-sized theatre. The quartet of singers features Alison St Ledger, Mia Goodwin, S.S Sebastian and Lucinda Shaw.

Here, Mia Goodwin pens an open letter about her love of 'Twin Peaks' and the origins of 'Fire Walk With Us'.

“When I was 11 years old, I used to wait till my parents were in bed, and then sneak out into the loungeroom, put the TV on real quiet – and enter a world that blew my mind. The world was David Lynch's TV series 'Twin Peaks'.

I think it was the music that initially captured my attention – on the teaser trailers you would see everywhere for the series, so haunting and melancholy, like the show.

I bought the soundtrack on a cassette. I still have it.

'Twin Peaks' was an obsession I carried around with me my whole life. I loved the mystery, the darkness. I watched and re-watched.

I played the soundtrack constantly.

So when my friend James Lees suggested we do the music from 'Twin Peaks' (he is also an uber-fan) at mine and my partner's music venue The Junk Bar, and have me perform in it and sing the songs of Julee Cruise. . . Well, I jumped at the chance.

James gathered a crew of extremely talented musicians – who were also uber-fans – and we performed two sold-out seasons of the show at The Junk Bar.

From that, we were invited to perform for two nights at The Melbourne Cabaret Festival.

And then, just when we thought it couldn't get any better – like as if we were in a dream – the producers that were bringing the original cast members of 'Twin Peaks' to Australia and NZ for 'A Conversation With The Stars' tour (DRW Entertainment) asked us if we would like to join the tour for Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and bookend the panel with our show.

Can you imagine? For me it was a dream come true. Not only did I get to play venues like The Palais Theatre to over 1,000 people – I got to meet and hang out with the actors I had grown up loving.

And we hung out, in green rooms before and after the show. And I got to Skype with David Lynch, and Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer) told me she loved hearing me sing, and it transported her back to the show. Because she used to listen to the music to get her ready for her scenes. We also opened The Junk Bar privately for the cast to come and hang out – and they loved it.

That was cool.

And now the story continues – as we perform the show at Brisbane Powerhouse in a new, supercharged version as part of Wonderland Festival. One of the things I have to mention about this show is that we are absolutely true to the original soundtrack.

The musical score is to the T. This is the biggest production of this show we have done. We are now a 12-piece band and we are more committed than ever to take everyone on a dreamy, dark, moody and emotional journey.

And once again. . . I can't wait.”

'Fire Walk With Us' plays Brisbane Powerhouse 24 November.
