Based on the controversial novel by Choderlos de Laclos, 'Dangerous Liaisons' comes to the Brisbane Powerhouse with it's tragic yet comedic story set in 18th Century france.
Acclaimed independent company Little Ones Theatre brings a unique brand of high camp to this lethal drawing room drama. Founder and Artistic Director of Little Ones, Stephen Nicolazz, explores the dangerous liaisons in their MELT Festival production:
What is it about this story that has encapsulated people's imagination for so long?
This story is about the loss of innocence and the power of love – eternal themes that continue to intrigue us all.
What is your favourite part about this production experience?
The ensemble and commitment of all of the actors in this production.
What is it about this story that is so controversial and creates so much suspense do you think?
Perhaps the original controversy focused on the idea that the bet at the centre of the drama was immoral. We have given this a contemporary twist and also found the humour and intrigue in a story where two people feel entitled to play with others’ lives.
'Dangerous Liaisons' is set in 18th Century France. How unique and demanding is the wardrobe for this production?
This is a contemporary take on an 18th Century work and our designer Eugyeene Teh has found a terrific place between a nod to 18th Century French fashion and a contemporary feel.
How much research went into the era for this production to be accurate?
Though we take a contemporary look at this era, understanding the context and setting of the piece was very important. A great deal of research was undertaken by Director Stephen Nicolazzo and Designer Eugyeene Teh.
The production has so far received high praises from audiences and critics alike, what makes this production so unique and enthralling for the audience?
We have taken a specific approach to casting that audiences have loved. We hope that Brisbane audiences also enjoy the humour and cleverness of the writing and the work of our wonderful ensemble of actors.
What do you think that you brought to your role in the production?
Little Ones Theatre Company is a queer theatre collective that creates camp, kitsch, and erotically charged theatrical events. Our productions are a pastiche of cinematic, literary, and pop-cultural references that are colourful, wild, and large in scale. 'Dangerous Liaisons' in this adaptation by Christopher Hampton is a wonderful opportunity to sink our teeth into a great work that provides an exciting sense through which we can view our society.
Have you had a show at Brisbane Powerhouse before and what has been your experience there?
This will be the premiere season in Brisbane by Little Ones Theatre and we are extremely excited!
'Dangerous Liaisons' plays Brisbane Powerhouse 3-5 February as part of MELT Festival which runs 3-14 February.
