Good news for those who like living on the (philosophical) edge — The Festival Of Dangerous Ideas will return to the Sydney Opera House in November.
The Wire and Treme creator, showrunner and writer David Simon headlines the bill with an examination of the "reality of American life", a topic Simon has arguably explored with greater success than any other thinker.
Other highlights include Savage Love sex columnist Dan Savage, Belurusian technology guru Evgeny Morozov, and environmental activist Vandana Shiva. Locals include professional provocateur John Safran, The Slap author Christos Tsiolkas and journalists Joe Hildebrand and Annabel Crabb.
That's just the tip of the ideological iceberg, as more than 80 speakers from 10 countries will discuss modern technology, the war on drugs, the justice system, the rise of women, the death of journalism, and the death of the American dream, which sounds plenty foreboding.

Melbourne's Wheeler Centre will also host a satellite event, The Pop-Up Festival Of Dangerous Ideas, on November 3 with David Simon, Dan Savage, sociologist Arlie Hochschild, journalist Hanna Rosin, and writer, director and producer Kirby Ferguson.
