'Celtic Illusion: The Magic Returns'
An avid writer, Trista has been contributing reviews, interviews, and articles to scenestr since 2016 and is building a career as a freelance writer.

Since its debut in 2011, ‘Celtic Illusion’ has performed to sell-out audiences across Australia and the world. In 2023, the global phenomenon returns with a brand-new chapter ‘Celtic Illusion: The Magic Returns’.

Created, directed by and starring Anthony Street – whose impressive resume includes four years touring as a principal dancer for Michael Flatley’s 'Lord Of The Dance' – ‘Celtic Illusion: The Magic Returns’ expertly fuses Irish music and dance with modern musical influences and a touch of magic to create a uniquely enjoyable experience which celebrates the raw power and beauty of Irish culture.

Accompanied by dancer and illusionist Georgia May, Anthony leads a talented cast of dancers in a series of tightly choreographed and perfectly executed routines set to a stunning soundtrack of songs, some of which are performed live on stage by gifted musicians and vocalists. Slow ballet-inspired numbers see the dancers gracefully leaping through the air and gliding ethereally across the stage.

Fast-paced routines seem to grow in intensity, pushing the dancers beyond the boundary of what seems possible. To the untrained eye, the dancers’ feet appear to move at unimaginable speeds as they effortlessly race, tap and glide their way across the stage in a series of precision routines which serve as testament to the cast’s stamina and dedication. Burlesque and Broadway-inspired numbers bring a modern sense of fun to the traditional art form and the show's tribute to musical great Michael Jackson is sure to impress.

While not as frequent as I expected, each display of magic and illusion is flawlessly executed, adding a sense of wonder and whimsy to the show and there are moments that are sure to leave even sceptics questioning just how they did it.

With each new routine, the cast take to the stage in stunning, yet simple costumes and the vivid shades of red, blue, green and pink stand out beautifully against the pale background lights of the stage. The women look stunning in their sultry short dresses, glittery shirts, and heels, while male dancers look every bit the elegant gentleman in suits, ties and vests of matching colours.

With her powerful, at times haunting voice, vocalist Georgia Hurford takes audiences on an emotional journey through her songs, while Shimna Higgins and Rennie Pearson deliver fun filled performances on the fiddle and flute.

Flawlessly delivered.
