French artist Celeste Boursier-Mougenot creates large-scale installation pieces that combine visually-stimulating presentations with aural sensations: that is, pretty stuff that sounds cool.
She uses the laws of nature and rhythms of everyday life to create new forms of art and music, and has an obvious love of unconventional musical instruments.
Her latest piece, clinamen, which will occupy the foyer of Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria between May and September, is a mesmerisingly pool of very blue water, upon which floats dozens of white porcelain bowls.
If you think that sounds unusual, wait until you hear the art piece; the bowls are directed by a gentle current and come into constant contact with one another, effectively creating a chiming, resonant musical soundscape.
The installation is free to view, and promises to create a space for contemplation and reflection, or perhaps just for passing hours watching bowls clink together.
Celeste Boursier-Mougenot: clinamen will be on display at Melbourne's NGV International from May 3 to September 8 2013.
