Tony and GRAMMY Award-winning musical ‘Hadestown’ will make its Australian premiere at Theatre Royal Sydney from February 2025.
Singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s ‘Hadestown’ has been seen by three million people, streamed by more than 350 million people, and adored by fans across the world. It won eight Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in 2019, including Best Score and Best Director. It continues to play to packed houses five years later.
Originating as an indie theatre project by Anaïs Mitchell and her artistic collaborator Rachel Chavkin, ‘Hadestown’ was transformed into a genre-defying musical blending modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz. . . Reimagining and reinvigorating the ancient tale of ‘Orpheus And Eurydice’.
“I’m absolutely thrilled that we’re able to bring this incredible new musical to Australia for the first time, and I’m sure it will be as adored here has it has been overseas, finding a whole new legion of fans,” Opera Australia Artistic Director Jo Davies says. “Creator and writer Anaïs Mitchell is just such an amazing talent, I’m very much looking forward to working with her and her team to realise this production here.”
