Seen by three million, streamed by more than 350 million and adored across the world – singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s acclaimed West End and Broadway musical phenomenon ‘Hadestown’ will premiere in Melbourne in May, 2025.
The Sydney season of ‘Hadestown’ went on sale earlier this year, smashing box office records. Now, Melbourne audiences are expected to snap up tickets with the same enthusiasm.
“Melbourne audiences embrace musicals like no other city and in return musicals delight in performing here due to the rousing receptions and support that they receive. ‘Hadestown’ will be no exception,” JONES Theatrical Group’s Suzanne Jones says. “Creator and writer Anaïs Mitchell is such an extraordinary talent and her musical is magical, bold, exciting and full of love and promise.”

‘Hadestown’ won eight Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in 2019 – including Best Score and Best Director. It’s still playing to packed houses five years later.
‘Hadestown’ originated as Anaïs Mitchell’s indie theatre project and has transformed into a genre-defying musical blending modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz, to reimagine the sweeping, ancient tale of ‘Orpheus & Eurydice’.
It’s a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back.
