Brisbane Artist Tames The Lion King

Matt Stewart
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

To celebrate the opening of 'The Lion King' this month, Queensland Performing Arts Centre has commissioned a local Brisbane artist to paint three artworks of 'The Lion King' from a Brisbane perspective.

Chosen out of several artists, Matt Stewart is a self-taught contemporary artist whose street style has a pop edge. For these paintings Matt takes inspiration from the Brisbane River, urban development, and towers with contemporary design. As an artist, Matt is influenced from a number of outlets, these are his top five:

Fashion

Fashion plays a significant influence in my artworks, as my pieces are mostly fashioned-orientated and feminine skewed.

Architecture & Design

I follow current Design, Architecture and Interior trends closely, to align my particular style with trends to a certain extent.

Street Art

While not having a street art background, I am always strongly interested in new styles that pop up from all over the globe. The constant evolution of street art is incredible!

Anthony Lister

An enigma in both street and gallery art, Anthony's style is raw, fresh and always unpredictable, which is what I love about his work.

Michael Zavros

Michael is a true gentlemen and a professional at his craft.  I love this professionalism which shows that artists don't need to be hobo-esque in order to gain notoriety.

Matt Stewart will be painting 'The Lion King' with a Brisbane twist in Queen St Mall on the 20th and 21st September.
