The Escapists is a collaboration of award-winning contemporary artists who value strong stories and an aesthetic that remixes traditional approaches to theatre and performance. The roles within the group are fluid with decisions being made as democratically as possible and with deference to all collaborators’ levels of experience pertaining to the area in question. The result? A startling and adventurous approach to theatre and performance making.
What's the elevator pitch of the workshop?
1. Don't panic, we're only trapped in here till they get a technician. 2. Here's a bit of info about a workshop I'd be doing if I weren't trapped in this elevator. We'll be doing a whole ton of exercises exploring the methodology behind the way I and The Escapists make work and get ready for performance. 3. Is it just me or is there not enough air in this lift?
As an actor and creative collaborator, how important is it to share knowledge and learn from other experts in your field?
As a collective of artists one of our major interests is the sharing of skills. It is so vital for anyone wanting to develop an artistic practice to share and exchange ideas and techniques.
What can participants expect from the experience?
Hopefully some new perspectives. Maybe a new friend or two? Some new ideas? And a free kitten* — *kitten may not be more than conceptual.
Top tip for aspiring actors/creatives? How can you do what you love and be successful?
You can't. It will become a job. And that's not a bad thing. Just remember that it isn't the only thing. And success must be a personal thing or you'll be doomed to disappointment. Learn as much as you can, read as much as you can.
