Barry Potter And The Magic Of Wizardry Casts A Satirical Spell Over Adelaide

'Barry Potter And The Magic Of Wizardry'
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Character comedian and magician Tim Motley is widely known for his Dirk Darrow shows, and now he's diving into the world of a wildly popular fictional wizard for Adelaide Fringe audiences.

Experience a world of messenger owls, robed wizards and flying broomsticks, as Tim Motley becomes Barry Potter. 'Barry Potter And The Magic Of Wizardry' is a chance for millennials and families to experience a fantasy satire of a familiar tale.

“I’m loving performing 'Barry Potter' this year. . . It’s my new pet project, and a very different character and audience than I usually work with,” Tim Motley says of the show. “I was a bit nervous about it at first, but doing magic a la my own personal wizarding world is heaps of fun. And I don’t mind changing pace and doing a family-friendly show. . . I thought I would, but it turns out to be a hoot. . . And I don’t mean owls.”

Tim has performed professionally in 50 countries as a comedian, mentalist, magician, actor, radio show host, improvisor, busker, and variety performer – so the stage is his happy place.

“I love to get audiences' guard down with silly jokes, and then wham! Break their reality. That look of a couple hundred people staring at you wide eyed with open mouths. . . Priceless.”

As for returning to Adelaide Fringe, it's a place Tim loves playing at for a number of reasons.

"One thing that I'm looking forward to at Adelaide Fringe is the venues. Not only are they both very well air-conditioned, but 'Barry Potter And The Howling Owl' sounds like one of the books! Such an appropriate venue name, I couldn't have asked for better. How many venues come with their own owlery?"

It's safe to say the festival is a place Tim feels at home – in more ways than one.

"I've actually performed at Adelaide Fringe more than any other festival on the planet. I like it so much, I moved here to Adelaide!"

'Barry Potter And The Magic Of Wizardry' plays The Garage International @ Adelaide Town Hall 17 February-17 March and Ground Floor at The Howling Owl (Adelaide Fringe) 16 February-17 March.
