On an unseasonably cold Adelaide night, pint-sized vixen Laurie Black turns the heat up as she hit the stage of the glorious Spiegel Zelt.
Bringing her 'Bad Luck Cabaret' to Adelaide for the very first time, Black saunters out with bad ass prowess oozing from every ounce of her being. This is a cabaret show with a twist, there’s a lot more darkness than Fringe punters have come to expect but Black’s wonderful stage presence perfectly sells the concept; we make our own luck, be that good or bad.
The crowd certainly aren’t left to be passive spectators and while it takes a while for them to jump on board with the concept, the ever persistent Black brings them over to the dark side and by the end of the show they are cheering and whooping at her every request. Working as a gallant host, Black performs her own original tunes between introducing a slew of fabulous acts.
A talented singer and pianist, Black performs tunes that invite light laughter but nothing too memorable. The jokes within the songs are a little basic and there are no hooks to truly pull you in, however to her credit and with much determination, Black does manage to entice the crowd to sing along from time to time.
The first of the two acts that the crowd meets is the zany Tara Boom who hits the stage wearing a popcorn maker strapped to a helmet and carrying two hula hoops. Hilarity ensues as the popcorn maker is plugged in and Boom performs a top notch hoop routine, all the while producing a tasty treats from her head! It’s really something that must be seen to be believed. Black re-emerges and encourages the crowd to play along with some fun games, sculling drinks and performing a fashion show with a twist – all in excellent fun.
The second and final act for the night are introduced and this is the true highlight of the evening. Zach and Viggo burst onto the stage with so much energy that the crowd are forced out of their cold weather slump.
Their brilliant act is sure to have the audience shouting their praises for days, if not weeks to come, to say much more would ruin the fun! The show comes to a close and a fun time has been had by all.
A solid hour of entertainment with the guests being the highlight, Black is a gracious and talented host.
