From the subversive to the silly to the sublime, artist and curator Art Whore together with Shu. of Urban Canvas Collective currently have an exhibition at The Graff Caff in Dulwich Hill, Sydney, showcasing local, underground graffiti and street artists.
Art Whore has blogged extensively on his love of toys, kitsch and street art. His exhibition brings together artists from Sydney’s Inner West, the walls of which have over time become a canvas for guerrilla art, subversion, activism, wordplay and provocation.
Legislation and legality have long forced local, graffiti artists underground. The street-art scene in Sydney is an under-nourished culture that nonetheless managed to produce works that are political, confronting, revolting, and mesmerising.
The sticker and paste-up exhibition is a chaotic amalgamation of pop-culture references, anti-advertising and attacks on cultural homogeneity. The exhibition features works from artists: BAA TV, AndrosOne, Amy Bean, Alex Plota, Aticus Finch, Beak Foundry, Bird Hat, Bize, Black Cat, BUNKWAA, BZAR Group, CAMO, CRABLO, Crash Corporation, CUPCO, Dogfight, Young Pizza, H-foot, HINDER, Hules, Ian Phenna, West Objects, John Paine, JoMaPi, KALIS, K R I S P E, Leith Hamilton, Manolo, Max Warlord, Mike Watt, Nufink, Roland Barnett, Rujunko Pugh, Serial Killers Unite, Shiroi Usagi, Shu., Skubz Mope, SKULL, SMC_3, SNAW, Trait, Quirky Bones, William Nghiem, Yiscah, YOLKK, Y_T
