The life and music of one of the greatest voices in history will be celebrated in ‘ARETHA’ – a love letter to the queen of soul.
The performance will make its world premiere at Sydney Opera House this June, before travelling to Brisbane and Melbourne. Through soulful storytelling, this night of music and memories will honour the legacy of global superstar Aretha Franklin. Aretha broke down barriers and paved the way for generations to come.
‘ARETHA’ will not only chart the music but also the ups and downs of the Queen Of Soul’s extraordinary career. The production will feature 32 songs and spoken narration, travelling through time from Aretha’s early gospel roots and rise to fame, to her legendary hits, and lasting impact on music.
The show will be narrated and directed by multi-talented First Nations actor Jada Alberts (‘Wentworth’, ‘Cleverman’), and feature musical direction by Joe Accaria (‘Velvet Rewired’).
The show will feature a line-up of stellar Australian vocalists: ARIA-nominated, award-winning Gumbaynggirr and Yamatji singer/songwriter Emma Donovan; singer-songwriter and art pop musician Montaigne; vocal powerhouse Thandi Phoenix; actor and singer-songwriter considered Australia’s ‘First Lady Of Soul And R&B THNDO; and multi award-winning actor, singer and writer Ursula Yovich.
“Aretha Franklin is arguably the most accomplished and sublime soul vocalist the world has ever seen,” Director, Writer and Narrator Jada Alberts says. “I’m thrilled to direct this incredible line up of vocalists as they interpret some of the most iconic songs of the 20th century in their own unique way, paying respect to a woman who has influenced us all.”
