The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT7) kicks off this weekend.
To be held over the next four months, it will be the 20th anniversary celebration of Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art’s international contemporary art event. APT is a showcase of some of the best contemporary art of Asia, the Pacific and Australia, and shines a light on the unprecedented transformations that have occurred in the region over the past two decades, covering themes such as landscapes, varied engagements with the city, and the adaptability of local cultures in today's globalised world.
The Honourable John-Paul Langbroek, MP, will be present at the APT7 Official Opening is on December 8 to launch the opening weekend program. Those present will get the first chance to catch a glimpse of some of the most impressive contemporary works in Asia, including performing arts, animations and structures, as well as artist talks from some of the 75 artists from 27 countries across the region.
Though the day’s proceedings must come to an end, the entertainment only goes from strength to strength as APT7 Up Late takes over, giving visitors the chance to experience some of the best contemporary music from the Asian Pacific region after dark.
The fun begins at the Queensland Art Gallery with a DJ set from Science Project, followed by The Family Butchers – a special performance by Brian Cavanagh, Nigel Kimber, Ross McLennan, Robert Crawford, Tom Yallowley performing a collection of songs from the fictional 1970s Indonesian band The Kuda. And headlining the night will be Syrian dabke (Arabic folk-pop) sensation Omar Souleyman.
Omar, having released four studio albums and performed all over the world, including a set at the illustrious Glastonbury last year, throws up one of the real musical highlights at this years APT event. Meanwhile, Brisbane DJs Walrii and Tyrone Noonan will be on show at the Gallery of Modern Art, and the Gallery of Modern Art Cinema will carry on from the day’s events as it hosts An Xu and Chen Xi, Wu Junyong, and Cao Fei.
