The official line-up for the forthcoming Anywhere Festival is Parramatta has been released!
One of the most unique festivals in Australia, Anywhere brings comedy, theatre and general arts performances to a wide range of non-traditional venues – that can literally be anywhere!
Nosferatu
Some of the highlights will include a cult cinema screening of vampire classic 'Nosferatu' (1922). Taking place at Shh Centre 4 Hybrid Arts, the cinema is perfect for snuggling up for a bit of blood and gore. Excluding rigid cinema seating in favour of comfortable couches and beds, this screening will include a live band providing the score for this creepy classic.
'Idle Lies'
Also taking place at Shh Centre 4 Hybrid Arts will be an interesting production entitled, 'Burning Angel' which is described as an absurd, sci-fi love-story. Using a mixed-media medium it explores the paranormal, pseudo-science and the multi-verse theory. See how technology has affected the conventions of modern relationships as one artistic, city couple house sit for a friend in the country.
'Josipa Draisma Is... Jean Claude Van Damme'
Comedy fans should check out an intriguingly named production of 'People Piss In Here'. Being performed at Connect Studios, 'People Piss In Here' is a surreal comedy about mental illness – set in a toilet block. Main character Jo is having a panic attack, and there’s no toilet paper. It veers from the mundane to the possibly divine, tackling the rarely discussed subject of mental illness, all the while laughing at the sheer insanity of it all.
'It Takes Two'
Taking place at Hambledon Cottage, 'The Dreaming Damsel' is a collaboration of three independent artists, Sumathi Krishnan (conceiver and vocalist), Dr John Napier (renowned vellist) and Aruna Gandhi (accomplished classical Indian dancer), coming together to take you on a journey into the courtyard of a Royal Palace in South India. They are accompanied by Abhijit Dan on Tabla and Pallavarajan Nagendran on Mridangam.
'Shh Gallery'
Centenary Square will host 'It Takes Two', an improvised duet derived from traditional ballet pas de deux and contact improvisation. It will be both a terrifying and exciting experience to watch performers being lifted off the ground and not know how they will come down.
'The Performing Nurse'
The Peking Duck restaurant will be the setting for 'Josipa Draisma Is... Jean Claude Van Damme'. When she was a kid, Josipa was in love with Jean-Claude Van Damme. She wanted to marry him. More importantly, she wanted to BE him. Decades later, it’s time to make that happen. Described as “a star performer simmering with underlying emotional intensity” by the Sydney Arts Guide, with Lloyd Bradford Syke saying it is, “a sterling if not completely flawless performance,” this is not a production you will want to miss.
The Anywhere Festival in Parramatta takes place 8-17 May. Anywhere Festival will also take place in Brisbane and Frankston.
