Addams Family Is Just The 'Thing'

The Thing from the Addams Family
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

In a new musical based on the characters created by Charles Addams; Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love.

Wednesday confides in her father, and now Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole Addams Family – Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Pugsley and Lurch – on the fateful night they host dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents…

We spoke with dancer Megan Peacock during the final rehearsals.

Describe this production in a sentence
A dark comedy reminding us all to love and be loved.

What is your role and how did you come to be involved?
I am a part of the ensemble, I play the dancing dead. I found out about auditions by Googling shows in Brisbane — I love musical theatre.

Your fav line in the show and why?
Morticia has a line about an old family member who lost his tongue, makes me giggle every time!

How do you think your creative energies add to the production?
I am a dancer, I love to perform. I try to pass on tips to the other ensemble members about what I do. I am also a photographer and have taken all the production promotional photographs.

Fill in the blanks:
The Addams Family will... make you laugh... and leaves you feeling... inspired... but it won't... scare you too much... and is surprisingly... one of the best musicals to be a part of.

Being a well-known and well-loved movie, does the cast feel any pressure to create something similiar?
I think the actors who are playing the main roles of the family members take inspiration from the movies and television series. Each actor has added their own flavour to their characters to make it a personal performance.

What's your dancing style? And any advice to up-and-coming creatives/ dancers/ choreographers etc?
I am a jazz, hip hop, tap and contemporary dancer. I think being a well-rounded dancer is most important. Try classes that are out of your comfort zone so you can bring more to what the choreographer is asking. This will make your choreography more dynamic — and most of all, make you more employable.

What do you want audiences to say as they leave?
I want audiences to leave feeling energised from seeing a live theatre performance. I want them to reflect on the importance of family and to enjoy living!

And what will you be saying to yourself on opening night?
When backstage ready to perform any show I do. I always think back to my audition. I remind myself how excited I was to be a part of this musical and how proud I am of myself that I got in. I get myself excited again and ready to show all my friends and family what I have been working so hard on.

Tell us about your Youtube video?
I made a parody of Sia's ‘Chandelier’ for a uni assignment. Two days after I shared it on Facebook, Sia Tweeted, shared it on Facebook and put the link to my video on her web-site. It now has over one million views. You can find it on Youtube by typing in ‘Sia Parody’. It's the one of me in a green wig.

Anything else readers should know?
Definitely come and see the show! Bring your friends and family and prepare yourself for a great night at the theatre. Lots of laughs to be had!

The Addams Family plays at the Brisbane Arts Theatre from August 9 to September 13.
