Brisbane-based, pop culture-inspired theatre company Act React are heading back to Adelaide Fringe.
The company have been regulars of the festival, each time presenting laugh-out-loud interactive parody shows, and boutique comedies. It seems 2022 will be no different – this year, the gang's bringing charming comedy cabaret 'All Day Breakfast With Sophie And Thien' to audiences.
‘All Day Breakfast’ is a comedy cabaret from two musical comics who just want to be sure their audiences are getting the nutritional chuckles they need at any time of the day. There’s topical tunes covering all things from social media mums, step goal fanatics, existential dread, and more.
We had a chat with Natalie Bochenski, Act React Producer, as well as Sophie Banister, one of its performers, about 'All Day Breakfast'.
Natalie, tell us about Act React.
We specialise in pop culture-inspired theatre and comedy. You might remember us for 'Speed: The Movie, The Play', 'Love/Hate Actually' and 'Raven On'. This year we’re bringing a hilarious musical comedy duo.
Sophie, tell us about 'All Day Breakfast', your powerhouse duo with Thien Pham. Who is it for?
This show is for the breakfast lovers, the people who acknowledge the world’s a bit much but like to live for the small things – like a perfect poached egg in the morning. If you are partial to wholesome comedy, music that’s a little on the theatrical side and performers who give you a surreal, more adult 'Play School' energy, please, let us serve you up a nutritious slice of our original tunes! 'All Day Breakfast' is for anyone in your brunch crew, but gives you an opportunity for a pick-me-up at the end of the day.
How were the songs for this show chosen?
Some of the songs poke fun at regular brunch-goers like the fitspo girl or the social media obsessed. Others are a little more loosely linked to more topical conversations we all may have nowadays when we get together with friends or relatives over food. All the songs in this show however are for everyone to fill themselves up with a laugh, questionable enthusiasm and a hearty welcome into our brekky-themed party.
What are you looking forward to about audiences seeing this performance?
We cannot wait to see audiences arrive and walk through that door, ticket in hand (or on their phone I guess) with an energy that says ‘I’m here and I’m double vaxxed!’. Then for them to take a seat and wait with anticipation, followed by joy because we have started right on the advertised starting time. You’re welcome. And finally, for us to bring them along with us, laughing, and then mildly confused as they react to how we have subverted their expectations about what an 'All Day Breakfast' could be.
'All Day Breakfast' plays The Sky Room at The Griffins (Adelaide Fringe) 18-27 February.
