Accessible Arts – 5 Reasons To Experience Video Art Project ArtScreen In Sydney In 2022

FA[C]TS by Demon Derriere
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

ArtScreen from Accessible Arts is a prestigious video art project celebrating the distinctive insights and unique skills of artists with disability or who are d/Deaf.

Artists Dani Pearce and Demon Derriere have been selected for the programme – their works will be featured at Sydney's Museum Of Contemporary Art in early December. Each artist's work will explore themes of identity, access, and social connectedness.

ArtScreen will take place in conjunction with celebrations for International Day Of People With Disability.

Here, the folks at Accessible Arts list five reasons to experience ArtScreen in 2022, and offer some information on the works being show as part of ArtScreen.

One

Powerful, sexy and challenging, FA[C]TS is a new work created by body positive activist, booty manipulator and creative director Demon Derriere. As a hard of hearing queer woman of colour, Demon demands society’s attention to abolish ableism, destigmatise fatphobia and liberate all bodies. She explores her experiences of 'otherness' as she expresses sexual energy and blurs the lines between dance and pornography using the art of tease.

Two

Journey into the new video artwork Places I Go by writer, director and artist Dani Pearce. Her work is inventive and explores feminism, womanhood, systems of power and the experience of invisible disability. Dani’s work has screened locally and internationally, including Sundance Film Festival, Cannes Young Director’s Awards, AVIFF Cannes Film Festival, BAFTA Aesthetica, Tribeca Video Art and Experimental Film Festival and many more.

Three

Be one of the first to immerse yourself in a unique experience celebrating leading creative artists with disability at this world premiere. These compelling works make an important contribution to the diversity of cultural expression and previous ArtScreen work has gone on to be further developed and selected for the Cannes Short Film Festival: Independent Films.

Four

ArtScreen is running in celebration of International Day Of People With Disability. One in five Australians identify as a person with disability or as d/Deaf and we are delighted to showcase some of the amazing works of talented artists within the community. ArtScreen helps shine a light on the importance of providing equitable opportunities for artists and audiences with disability.

Five

ArtScreen is an accessible event. The venue is wheelchair accessible, and all video artworks are screened on a loop featuring Auslan interpreted, captioned and audio described versions. The Q&A Panel with the ArtScreen artists, MC’d by alumni Debra Keenahan, will also be live captioned and Auslan interpreted.

ArtScreen is on at Museum Of Contemporary Art Australia (Sydney) 3-4 December.
