Abandon: It's Not An Opera

Majella has been part of the scenestr “scene” for over 20 years. She has interviewed some of the biggest names in the music industry but the size of the star doesn’t matter as much as the quality of the conversation.

Staged as part of the World Theatre Festival (WTF), 'Abandon' is a mash-up of baroque music and contemporary dance.

This innovative new work by Opera Queensland Artistic Director Lindy Hume, Dancenorth Artistic Director Raewyn Hill and virtuoso classical accordionist James Crabb, will feature four Opera Queensland singers, five dancers from Dancenorth and two musicians. One of the singers, Annie Lower, is excited to be part of the production.

What role do you play?
While our show doesn't delineate particular characters, the two big arias that I sing belong to the character of Alcina, a dangerous sorceress who seduces men and turns them into rocks or trees once she's finished with them. I get to show two sides to her with two very different arias: her heartbroken state when a lover finally leaves her and her fury at being scorned.

How did you become involved?
I auditioned in late 2012. I was drawn to this project because along with being an opera singer I have some dance training and I loved the idea of combining the two disciplines.

If people don't understand or are unfamiliar with opera — will they still enjoy the show?
Absolutely. 'Abandon' is not an opera. It's a piece of theatre in its own right that fuses opera and dance. But for those unfamiliar with opera, it will also be a wonderful introduction to the beautiful operatic music of Handel.

Fav. part of the show and why?
Singing while being lifted and twirled around by our incredible dancers. So much fun. And wearing Alistair Trung's beautiful costumes.

What was it like working with the three co-creators Lindy Hume, Raewyn Hill and James Crabb?
It was great to have three such individually gifted artists growing this project and ultimately sharing a vision for it. It also kept us on our toes as performers as we knew that the drama, dance and musical aspects of the piece were under constant (but loving) scrutiny.

Any stories from behind-the-scenes that you can share?
Just before our second rehearsal period last year, Raewyn injured her foot and was on crutches. While this was horrible for her, the memory of her whizzing around the stage directing us while perched on a swivel chair does make me laugh.

Describe the production in five words?
Sensual, exciting, risky, sublime, mesmerising.

'Abandon' will be performed at the World Theatre Festival (WTF) as part of the Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM) at Brisbane Powerhouse from Feb 21-23.
