The centrepiece of Melbourne Theatre Company’s 2024 season is one of the most celebrated plays of the 20th century: ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’.
‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ is set agains the backdrop of a 1940s New Orleans. The Tennessee Williams classic will be directed by Melbourne Theatre Company’s own Anne-Louise Sarks.
Nikki Shiels returns to Melbourne Theatre Company following her triumph in ‘Sunday’. She stars alongside Michelle Lim Davidson (‘The Newsreader’), Mark Leonard Winter (‘The Dressmaker’), and Steve Mouzakis (‘The Lifespan Of A Fact’) as Blanche, Stella, Stanley and Mitch.
“Theatre is an art form that lives in the present moment,” Melbourne Theatre Company Artistic Director Anne-Louise Sarks says. “Williams’s masterpiece has moved audiences of all kinds for decades, and it will maintain its perpetual relevance. The exploration of violence, fear and trauma, and the way those things forever alter us and affect our ability to connect with each other is part of a timely conversation.”
“Our production will honour the origins of this well-known play, but also harness its relevance and theatricality in a fresh new way.”
‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ follows Blanche DuBois as she grapples with her shattered dreams and inner demons. She seeks refuge in her sister Stella and volatile brother-in-law Stanley’s cramped apartment. Tensions build, as dark secrets fan flames of an incendiary marriage.
The balance of power in the household teeters on the brink of collapse. . . Exposing the vulnerability of the human condition.
‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ plays Arts Centre Melbourne from 9 July.
