Now in its 57th year, Brisbane Writers Festival (BWF) aims to celebrate the work of writers facing and battling the big issues in society, such as climate, race, gender, and the rise of the digital age.
With a stellar list of over 160 internationally renowned writers, thinkers, and opinion makers, there's a huge amount of shows to pick and choose from.
Here, Program Manager Rachel Fry has cast her eyes over the festival's events to give us her five top picks.
Check them out below.
One
The Opening Night Gala. Featuring Baker Boy, Steven Oliver, Omar Sakr, Melanie Mununggurr-Williams and Solli Raphael as they explore and celebrate their way through what it means to be human. Stellar line-up of spoken word artists to celebrate opening night!
Two
How To Be Human In The Digital Age. We all love our tech, our quick access to information, our never-ending ability to create a playlist for every possible reason or season. But are we giving away too much of ourselves with our online lives? Do we really understand what’s happening in this new frontier? Fall down the rabbit hole with our expert leaders and writers in this curiouser and curiouser space.

I’m cheating on this one and suggesting more than one session, because we have an incredible number of Indigenous authors on the programme you must see! Uncle Jack Charles, actor and author of 'A Born Again Black Fella', and Tony Birch, a leading Indigenous storyteller with his latest book 'The White Girl' are top of my list.
Four
Love dystopian futures? I do! We have Jasper Fforde with his incredible wit and humour on stage in five events including our Closing Address.
Five
Join Eve L. Ewing, American Sociologist, poet and writer of Marvel comic 'Ironheart' in three amazing events covering compassion, survival, art and our shared humanity!
Brisbane Writers Festival is on from 5-8 September at State Library Of Queensland and Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery Of Modern Art.
