Gallery One in Mitcham was founded in 1974 as an independent and not-for-profit initiative, that survives through the hard work of volunteers and fundraising events such as the Mitcham Art Prize and Auction.
The gallery will be holding its Gala Night on 9 July and will feature an auction of wooden cigar box lids painted by an assortment of South Australian artists, including the acclaimed Robert Hannaford.
Originating in Greece and Rome, artists used wood panels to create their works until canvas became prevalent by the 16th century, and somewhat later in the Netherlands. Bosnian born second generation artist and Mitcham Art Prize entrant Sonja Durmanovic provides her top 5 most expensive paintings on wood, and if this is not within your price range, worry not: some start at only a few million. Plus, you can always stock up on some canned goods and start saving a few decades ago.
