5 Easy Steps To A Circus Revolution With The WonderWombs

'The WonderWombs'
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

An all-female circus for the senses, 'The WonderWombs' – brought to you by The Dust Palace – plans to uncork your senses like a bottle of cheap champagne.

“The seeds were planted as we passed around an article about circus and the Bechdel Test, it was a piece that questioned the hyper-sexualised and heavily binary modes of performance that have become the norm for women in circus. From there a rocky pathway began as together we examined ourselves, our company and our industry. We cringed, we laughed, we did some research and we started creating a new show.

“'The WonderWombs' is our breath of fresh air, it is the space for our women to define who we are, how our articulate bodies work and how we connect with our own stories.”

Become A Grave-Digger: Bring Back The Bad-Ass Mothers

We are bringing life to our ancestors like a vogue ball – cat calling those mothers back into the room! Standing on the shoulders of femme giants, we are throwing a party for all the super extraordinary women in circus throughout history who survived to make our bodies possible. Ariel scavenged this book in a small town bookshop in rural NZ, connecting us with women's circus in the 1890s!

Get Pithy: Don't Waste A Sound

We uplift the walking bible that is Jane Fonda when she says: “It took me ten years to realise that ‘no’ is a complete sentence”. 'WonderWombs' reserves the right to speak in these complete sentences, to become women of few words. We encourage you now to practise. Use the most complete two letter sentence you know:
Will you marry me? No.
Give your Uncle a kiss goodbye! No.
Can you open this pickle jar?
...Okay, the last answer is yes for us, because we are mega-ripped, but well done. Take any opportunity to practice your complete sentences. Before long, you won’t even have to smile apologetically!

Start Exercising (And Exorcising) The Goddess: Being Strong (For A Girl)

How do you qualify your body? How do you see mine? Is it beautiful, sexy, feminine? Is my body functional, articulate and capable of super human feats? Take your goddess for a walk around the block. Remember, the recommended number of steps per day for optimum goddess health is: As many as you f...ing feel like. 'WonderWombs' are out here lifting the glass ceiling, but even superheroes have demons. We are all possessed by a shame-based culture, so join the resistance! We are re-framing our bodies and inviting you to watch.

Boycott The Femme Or Feminist Olympics

What’s HOT? self-worth! What’s NOT? Trying to win by tearing other babes down. We at 'WonderWombs' are so bored by the woke olympics, the babe olympics, the political olympics and the trauma olympics. Gender is not an elevator we are trapped in fighting for air! There’s enough space for all of us. Lets make space for each other's unique histories before we pass judgement. Breathe in, Preach out!

Girls quote

If Instagram Is Our Church, This Is Our Sermon

Why do we have f...ed up relationships with our hair. Our face. Our stomach. Our butts. Why does this inform our gait, our relationships, our method of talking, our safety mechanisms.
For whom do I tilt my chin down, pop a hip and take a high angle selfie?
This show is not about gender.
Gender is the thread but it is not the springboard, the question, nor the resolution.
It is the product.
So what do we do with this product?
We repackage it.
We rebrand.
We sell it back to you.
It is humanity, not femininity.
It is humanity, not a high heel.
It is humanity, not masculinity.
It is humanity, not a muscle up.

Come for the art, come for the laughs, come for the muscles, come for the sex.

'The WonderWombs' play Brisbane Powerhouse 29 November-1 December.
