Masters of acrobatics come together in the new Circus Oz show, 'TWENTYSIXTEEN'.
The performance is a self-proclaimed cocktail of new and old, and the inspiration stems directly from circus as an art form. Director and performer Anni Davey lists her top 5 circus superstitions and oddities ahead of the show's remaining national dates.
Break A Leg
Never say break a leg before a show to a circus performer. For obvious reasons, besides which it is in very bad taste.Milk
Fire breathers drink milk before they perform (hopefully dairy farmer friendly milk!). The say milk lines the stomach which helps to stop your body ingesting the fire fuel if you accidently swallow it, but who knows!Undies
Lucky undies! Always wear your lucky undies! And if you don’t have lucky undies make sure you always wear undies!{youtube}v=hZctuxH9Xyg{/youtube}
Rituals
Every performer has their own private preparation rituals. Sometimes we develop group preps. A recent one for our show 'TWENTYSIXTEEN' involves everyone holding their fists together in a circle, a bit like playing Rock Paper Scissors, and shouting enthusiastically “SHINY. HOOP. DIVER!” to get us pumped up before the show. (We have a hoop diving act in the show)Superglued Skin
Would you believe that when trapeze artists tear holes in their hands from the grip, they superglue the skin back on! Icky isn't it!TwentySixteen Tour Dates
