La Boite's broad range of talent, diversity and variety continues to be a testament to the quality of theatre that they put on year after year.
Kicking off the 2017 season is 'Single Asian Female', which was presented to Brisbane audiences as part of the theatre's HWY initiative in 2016. Created by Michelle Law, the show skewers race and gender, and answers what exactly it means to be an Asian woman living in Australia.
'The Village', directed by La Boite Artistic Director Todd MacDonald, is a collaboration with refugee settlment agency MDA Ltd. It brings to light real stories and real experiences faced by refugees and asylum seekers, and encourages the attendance and attention of young people.
In the third instalment of their pop-cultural cabaret (including 'Wrecking Ball' and 'Rumour Has It'), Naomi Price and Adam Brunes will present 'Lady Beatle'. Inspired by true accounts, the show tells stories about the woman who inspired some of The Beatles greatest hits, such as 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds', 'Eleanor Rigby' and 'Lady Madonna'.
Addressing themes like drug abuse and rape is 'Blackrock' by Nick Enright. Again directed by Todd MacDonald and a collaboration with QUT Creative Industries, this show dives deep into the differences between a 'friend' and a 'mate', and tackles the impact of violence in Australian culture.
The vibrant and colourful 'Laser Beak Man' is a marriage between Dead Puppets Society and the talents of David Morton, Nicholas Paine and the artwork of Tim Sharp. It follows the adventures of Power City's resident superhero, as he protects the residents and himself from Peter Bartman, Laser Beak Man's oldest nemesis.
International award-winning duo Candy B and Busty Beatz will unleash their creativity in 'One The Bear', a show written wholly in rhyme and described as 'a fairytale for the hip hop generation'. One and her friend Ursula mourn the lives they used to lead, and wonder why they are no longer free. 'One The Bear' is guaranteed to burst the senses and expand the mind.
Artists in residence for 2017 include the Black Honey Company, Digi Youth Arts and Steven Oliver. HWY will return in June to showcase the work of the artists in residence, acting as a platform for these artists to grow and further their practice.
