Kyle Weir - scenestr of the day

Published in SOD
What do you do?
A lot lately; opening a new venue in Southbank called Little Big House, so that’s been taking up most of my calendar and sleeping patterns. But when we open, I’ll be immersing myself back into a social life, regular sleeping pattern and some amazing live music.

Why do you do it?

Hospitality? I don’t think there’s a job in the world where you meet so many humans while still holding onto a tight team to base yourself within. It’s a great mix of working on a computer or behind the scenes and then being able to completely switch up the day by getting behind the taps and having a chinwag to whoever will listen. The focus of my job, personally is to help build people and allow them to grow and flourish into what they want to be so this is totally where I want to be.

What do you love about the city you live in?

Pretty fresh back to Brisbane after living in Sydney for the past five years, although I was a frequent visitor while living in NSW to keep my mum happy. But every time I visited Brisbane it was like the city had grown an extra limb. New things to do, new places to eat and drink, new developments to check out. It’s also a few clicks slower than the busy vibes of Sydney, which I’m totally ok with.

Where did you go for your last holiday?

Italy actually. My amazing little sister had her wedding over there. Life highlight for sure!

What's your favourite item of clothing?

I don’t actually know where to start. I’m the biggest sucker for designer streetwear. Ask anyone close to me, the things I don’t mind splashing out on is good quality coffee, because pre 8am is often tricky to manage, amazing wine and clothing. I’d probably say my leather jacket would be my favourite piece of clothing, but it doesn’t get around to being worn too much up here in Brissie. So maybe Queensland favourite would be my Guns N Roses shirt I found at a market a few years ago, from the '70s and definitely looks like it’s from the 70s. Sooooo over-sized and soooo comfy.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?

'Mythbusters'. Still a sucker for that amazing piece of TV.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?

Woodstock for sure. Or Metallica's gig in Russia where they played to a crowd of a million people. Huge.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?

It’d probably be a matter of what you’d be drinking. You’d be starting with a can of mango, especially if you’re a friend visiting from Sydney, then into some sparkling Rose, because I’m the guy who goes out for beers with the boys but drinks Rose.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?

To love and accept everyone as they are. Thanks mum and dad.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...

Oh god. I’ll come back to this one, let me have a think! Ok, I’m back. I keep my life plan pretty close to me, but next year I’m starting a charity business on the side focusing on helping with mental health, confidence and expressing your true self, with some help from some friends in the music business. I love a good quote or lyric and that’s what I’ll be basing it around ;)

Are you happy with your work/ life balance?

I am. Previous years definitely was guilty of bringing work home and putting too much effort and thought into my future endeavours. But living in Queensland, half a highway from the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast for a surf makes it pretty easy.

How do you define success?

What's your spirit animal?

Maybe a cane toad. I’m a bit of a pest sometimes.
