5 Inspiring Creatives With Quails

Quails has released her new single 'Origami'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Sydney singer-producer Quails shakes a tail feather with her new song 'Origami', melding her hybrid of electronica, dark pop and R&B.

Beginning with stark piano and vocals, 'Origami' quickly unfolds in layers of synth, vocals and urgent, syncopated beats.

“'Origami' examines the delicate and muffled struggle of one person’s affection of another,” Quails says about the track.

“The references to origami conjure a sense of beautifully intricate, complex and delicate forms, which have retreated from being open to intimacy and instead have shut it out completely.”

Here, Quails shares her Top 5 inspiring creatives.

1: Andy Garvey

Andy is one of my all-time-favourite local DJs and I wish I was her. She is the go-to gal for bumping brokenbeats and memorable techno sets. In addition to being a full-time boss on the decks, Andy is closing the gender divide in dance music on triple j Mix-Up, started her own label, Pure Space, and a collective called Nectar, plus running events and workshops in Sydney for young women. I repeat: I wish I was her.

2: Victoria from Mannequin Hands

So I am def [sic] not one of those girls who always looks immaculate, has fresh-af nails and snatched hair and make-up. I am the worst, but whenever I want to treat the heck out myself, Victoria does the most fun, popping manicures, and she has the most down-to-earth banter, shares my love for R&B and lives with the cutest ever floof named Buffy.

3: Ayebatonye

I once went to a sick warehouse party put on by Ayebatonye, featuring art installations, spoken-word poetry, and yes binch, a catwalk. The Australian creative industry needs more Ayebatonyes. She currently hosts a podcast on FBi Radio called ‘Don’t @ Me’ investigating and unpacking complex current social topics.

4: Lottie England, founder of Venus Blooms

Lottie creates amazing one-of-a-kind festival pieces and customs. She is all about sustainable, slow and ethical fashion, and stocks some ripper vintage pieces on her online store as well. Lottie is super passionate about sustainability and at the same time ensuring that you are a standout at the next doof ('cause, why not have both?).

5: Mikaela Stafford from Tszuj

If you have brushed shoulders with the who’s who out in Sydney or Melbourne recently, you are sure to have seen some slick-as-hell installations and lighting design by Tszuj. Honestly inspiring and head-turning stuff, Tszuj recently lit up Sydney’s Boiler Room gig among other amazing accomplishments. Also, follow Mikaela on Instagram for a journey starring her stunning hair (see: permed mullet and clippered love hearts).

'Origami' is available now.
